Wollongong City Council is calling for emerging artists aged between 18 – 24 years to apply for the 2011 Youth Artist in Residence Program.
The successful applicant will receive free use of Wollongong Youth Centre’s studio space from February - December 2011, $2000 to assist with materials and equipment costs, and an exhibition to be held at the Youth Centre. Applications close on Thursday, 27 January 2011.
Manager of Community, Cultural and Library Services (Acting), Sue Savage said that three artists had participated in the program since its inception in 2008.
“The Youth Artist in Residence Program allows young artists to develop their practice in a supportive environment, and gain insight into the many processes involved in producing and presenting an exhibition” said Ms Savage.
“The Artist in Residence will benefit from a range of professional development and mentoring opportunities, including participation in artist talks, workshops and the Youth Centre’s art-based programs.”
“Applications are open to artists working across any medium, from painting, sculpture and illustration to digital, sound, photography and installation,” Ms Savage said.
“Being based at Wollongong Youth Centre will allow the Artist in Residence to engage in regular discussions and exchange of ideas with other young people in the community, and to contribute to a vibrant art culture.”
This program is a partnership between Wollongong Youth Services, Wollongong City Gallery and Cultural Services.
Applications forms are available at Wollongong Youth Centre, or by contacting Wollongong Youth Services on 4226 5969 or Cultural Services on 4227 7599.
