Are you a young person with some great ideas? Here’s an opportunity to make them happen.

Wollongong City Council’s Youth Services is encouraging young people between 12-24 to get involved in its Wollongong Youth Action Team (WYAT) to develop ideas and create change within Wollongong.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said WYAT supports Council’s two-year Engagement Strategy for Young People.

“Younger members of our city have great ideas to contribute yet often their voices are not heard by the community,” Cr Bradbery said.

“WYAT forms part of Council’s two-year engagement strategy for young people. It’s a way for people between 12-24 to get involved and help create some change locally.”

The first team formed in 2011 and undertook a range of projects, including hosting the National Youth Week launch in MacCabe Park, running outdoor social volleyball and consulting with other young people in the city.

Cr Bradbery called on interested young people to apply and said it was a chance to develop leadership skills.
“It really is a great program for young people to be involved with. Participants will gain leadership skills, learn about event management and build long-term relationships with other young people.

“The idea is that this group is able to make some real changes and take away some very practical skills.”

Young people involved with WYAT will also contribute to Wollongong 2022, Council’s project that will set a 10-year plan for the city.
WYAT is just one of the many activities and groups coordinated out of the Wollongong Youth Centre including new performer nights, art workshops, and a youth radio show.

“By picking the projects they support and learning along the way, this group has great potential to help improve the local community.”

Nominate by filling in the Expression of Interest form online before Friday 27 January.
