Defending champs PHD Engineering will be going for gold again this year when they compete in Rotaract Illawarra’s Bed Run.
The annual event is part of Wollongong City Council’s Australia Day celebrations.
Teams of five from local businesses and community groups are required to push their hospital bed along a 100m course.
Rotaract Bed Run Organiser Siddharth Yadwad said this year’s event would raise funds for the patient recovery ward at Wollongong Hospital.
“The Bed Run is always great fun and a bit of a laugh and it plays an important role in fundraising for the hospital,” Mr Yadwad said.
“Last year we raised more than $6000 which went towards purchasing oxymetry units, which measure levels of oxygen in the body, for the neonatal ward. Our target this year is $7000, which we will be donating to the patient recovery ward.”
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said the madcap event was a highlight of Council’s Australia Day celebrations and always entertaining. He encouraged local organisations to consider entering their own team.
“Australia Day is a great time to get out and have a bit of fun with family and friends,” Cr Bradbery said.
“The Bed Run is one of the many events on the day. It’s a great team bonding exercise and also a good way to raise some money for Wollongong Hospital”
The Bed Run has been organised by Rotaract, the youth arm of Rotary International for the past three years and has become a major event in Wollongong’s Australia Day celebrations.
