Mullet Creek

Wollongong City Council has engaged Bewsher Consulting Pty Ltd to prepare a Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan for the combined catchments of Mullet Creek and Brooks Creek. Wollongong City Council and the Department of Environment and Climate Change are jointly funding the study.

The primary objectives of the study will be to firstly assess the nature of the flood risk in the study area, followed by the assessment of options for reducing the impacts of flooding on existing development and to prepare a framework within which future development, including West Dapto, can take place in accordance with the current best floodplain management principles. The plan has the objective of reducing the flood risk and minimising the long-term impact of flooding on the community, through the assessment and recommendation of flood mitigation measures. These measures could involve a mixture of structural works such as levees, flood proofing properties, or stream clearing, in combination with planning options or improvements to flood response.

The Mullet Creek and Brooks Creek Flood Study, defining existing flood behaviour and risk in the study area has recently been completed and awaiting for adoption by Council.

The Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan is in draft final format pending additional investigation into climate change and its affects on flood levels in the lower Mullet and Brooks Creek catchments. It is anticipated that the study will be finalised in late 2009.

Status: Flood study complete. Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan is currently being finalised.
