Public place recycling
Recycling at home has been part of every day life for many years and now recycling is an accepted practice at work. People are now expecting to be able to recycle when they leave their home and visit public places.
A lot of people enjoy their leisure time at any one of our beautiful beaches, parks or sportsgrounds. More social activities outside the home mean more eating and drinking, and therefore more waste occurring outside the home. The increase in waste generation in public places highlights the need to develop systems that respond to our changing lifestyles. Public place recycling generally means recycling facilities installed in places such as parks, shopping centres and beaches.
We have initially targeted a select number of beaches to place recycling facilities with a view to increase recovery of bottles and cans and to reduce the amount of waste that traditionally ended up in landfill. The ability to conduct successful recycling collections in public places is dependent on the recycling skips not getting contaminated with the wrong items.
Recycling is increasingly being undertaken at temporary 'special events' such as fetes, festivals and concerts. We is activitely seeking the involvement of event organisers to make all events held across the Wollongong local government area, 'waste wise events' and ultimately 'sustainable events'.
The first recycling facility for a sportsground has commenced with Thomas Dalton Park being selected to raise awareness of recycling at sportsgrounds. We also have a few reycling bins at selected beaches.
Please 'Be Waste Wise' at home, at work and when visiting one of our public places!
