Safety guidelines
Clothing for maximum protection:
- long pants and long sleeves;
- strong, enclosed boots or shoes;
- strong work gloves;
- wide brimmed hat;
- wear protective glasses when removing weed such as Lantana.
Hazardous materials on site:
- follow the safe working procedure for handling & disposal of any needles that are found. Gloves and sharps containers are to be used;
- asbestos or fibro refuse: report all findings to the coordinator. Do not touch;
- herbicide to be used only if training has been completed;
- eye protection, long sleeves, long trousers/overalls and impervious gloves are to be worn when handling or spraying herbicide;
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will be kept on site when herbicides are used.
Hazards on site:
- be alert to the presence of snakes and spiders and report any sightings to the coordinator;
- report all near misses and incidents that occur in the work zone to the coordinator;
- use sun screen on exposed skin;
- take frequent drinks breaks on hot days and work in the shade if possible.
