If you live close to a creek, or major stormwater drain or outlet, or in a low-lying area, you may be at risk from flooding even if you haven't experienced a flood personally. There are some basic measures you can take to prepare yourself for a flood:
- Keep emergency phone numbers handy (eg. local Police, hospital, ambulance, SES, Council, etc).
- In case you need to evacuate during a flood, work out a safe route to the designated emergency centres or safer ground.
- Regardless of your situation, have a flood emergency plan for your home and family and prepare an emergency kit with:
- Portable radio.
- Torch.
- Spare batteries for radio and torch.
- Candles and waterproof matches.
- First aid kit.
- Special medications or dietary foods.
- Strong shoes and rubber gloves.
- Waterproof bag for valuables (photographs, important documents, jewellery etc).
