being prepared

If you live close to a creek, or major stormwater drain or outlet, or in a low-lying area, you may be at risk from flooding even if you haven't experienced a flood personally.  There are some basic measures you can take to prepare yourself for a flood:

  • Keep emergency phone numbers handy (eg. local Police, hospital, ambulance, SES, Council, etc).
  • In case you need to evacuate during a flood, work out a safe route to the designated emergency centres or safer ground.
  • Regardless of your situation, have a flood emergency plan for your home and family and prepare an emergency kit with:
    • Portable radio.
    • Torch.
    • Spare batteries for radio and torch.
    • Candles and waterproof matches.
    • First aid kit.
    • Special medications or dietary foods.
    • Strong shoes and rubber gloves.
    • Waterproof bag for valuables (photographs, important documents, jewellery etc).
