Huntley
Location
Parish of Kembla County of Camden
Huntley is a sparsely populated suburb 6 km WSW of Dapto and 3 km north of Avondale. The suburb is bounded by Wongawilli in the north, Avondale in the south and Horsley and Cleveland in the east. The southern boundary is Mullet Creek with the Illawarra escarpment to the west. The name Huntley was officially assigned by the Geographic Names Board of N.S.W. on 5th August 2005. Before that date it was referred to as West Dapto or Avondale.
Place names
The suburb of Huntley was named after the coal mine located within its boundary. The mine name ‘Huntley’ is a variant of Huntly, a coal mining town in the North Island of New Zealand that the original owners had an affiliation with. (Illawarra Coal)
