How to join the Library

How to Join!

Library membership is free and you don't need to live in the Illawarra to become a member!

As a library member you are able to loan items from our collections, access our online resources and collections and use equipment and technologies within the library.

You can join at any of our Libraries or online. Please bring proof of address to join - either a Driver's licence or some other form of official photo ID which lists your current address. Alternatively, you can provide two forms of other ID with one of them listing your current residential address. If joining online, you will need to bring your proof of address ID to your nearest library to complete your membership.

If you are under 16 years of age you will need a parent or guardian with appropriate identification to join.

Our main categories of membership are:

Adult (over 18 years)

Youth (13-18 years)

Junior (0-12 years)

Other categories of membership include:

Non-resident Membership: Non-resident customers are welcome to join the library. Current identification showing proof of address is required.

Independent Minors: Minors who are under sixteen (16) years and who are living independently can join the library. Current identification showing proof of age and address is required.

Local Organisations: Local organisations such as pre-school and retirement centres can join the library. Written approval from the organisation's management and including a signature from a responsible person is required.

Temporary Memberships: If a customer is in the area temporarily, such as an overseas student, then they can join the library provided they have proof of address and their passport. Membership will have an expiry date prior to them leaving Australia.

Adults and Minors without a permanent address: A restricted membership can be organised for anyone without a permanent address.

Assisted Borrowing: This service is designed to help customers who cannot access a library, but who have a family member, friend or neighbour who is willing to select and deliver their library material to them.

Home Library Service: The Home Library Services provides library materials to residents of Wollongong who are unable to visit a library in person.

What Can I Borrow?

All members can borrow any items from the lending collections which include fiction, non-fiction, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs and music CDs. Your library card entitles you to borrow from all library locations and return to all locations.

How Long Can I Borrow For?

The loan period is four weeks. Loans can be renewed as required. Some collections have different loan conditions, please ask staff for details.

To renew phone the library on (02) 4227 7428 during business hours or log in to your account to renew online.  You will need your library card no. and your Pin to log in.

Loans will not be able to be renewed if they have been reserved by another customer.

Please note overdue fees apply for items returned after the due date. Avoid fees by returning or renewing by the due date.

What Can I Download?

Library members can download eBooks, eAudiobooks and magazines through our online services. Full text articles are also available for download from our online resources database collection.
