Setting up or running a small business
We've put together a guide for people who are running or considering setting up a small business in Wollongong. Visit our Small Business page for details about permits and where you can get advice.
We also run several business support programs that can help small business owners.
Planning rules for business
You may need to get Council's permission, such as a Development Application, to run a business.
Wollongong's Local Environmental Plans describe the different zones of land in our council area, as well as what types of development activities - including operating businesses - are allowed on each zone of land.
Our Development Control Plan (DCP) also includes important information about where and how businesses can operate, as well as guidelines for advertising signage, markets and more.
If you're not sure whether your business needs development permisison from Council, call us on (02) 4227 7111 or email us for advice.
Health and safety
There are many health and safety regulations associated with running a business.
The following businesses are required to be registered with Wollongong City Council:
- accommodation facilities
- food premises
- hairdressing salons and skin penetration premises
- home businesses
- street trading and markets
- all buildings which contain water cooling systems
- any place with a public swimming pool or spa pool.
You'll find more details about health and safety requirements for businesses in our Forms and Factsheets library.
