Men's Spaces and Places

There is a number of men’s shed organisations in Wollongong, with the wider community recognising the important role they have in supporting the needs of men.

Council made a commitment in its Community Strategic Delivery Plan 2012/2013 to develop a Men’s Shed Strategy to guide Council’s role in this area and meet the social, cultural and recreational needs of men.

This commitment resulted in a report called Men’s Spaces and Places - Final Report which looks at the importance of men’s sheds and spaces in the local community. The document also reports on what the community thinks about men’s sheds and spaces through an extensive community engagement survey.

The report outlines several actions by which Council may contribute to supporting existing and future men’s sheds and spaces, men’s programs and initiatives, such as:

1. Increase community awareness of men’s sheds and programs whilst support initiatives that increase programs and activities for men

2. Identify training and development needs to strengthen staff, volunteers and local organisations working with men

3. Improve the level of communication between Council and community groups to achieve capacity building of men’s sheds and groups.

Council’s report is supported by several documents, which can be viewed below:
