I’ve been in a wheelchair nearly my whole life after a bout of meningitis as a baby.
My parents forced me to use sticks (callipers) as a child.
At 12 years I decided to solely use a wheelchair – I was much happier.
Everyday life
I can do pretty much everything! From having a shower to driving, camping & earning a living.
I don’t see myself as having a disability.
I live with my family, but they are not my carers.
Positive stuff
Discovering my voice (in Year 5) and my life’s passion – music
Singing – “the only thing I’ve never quit”
Getting into sport: representing Australia in basketball, weightlifting and swimming
Difficult stuff
Dealing with “wheelchair frustration”
Dealing with the lifestyle of a musician
Learning to deal with anger: counselling, meditation, pet therapy
School experiences
At one school I was treated as a disabled person – I didn’t like it
At another I was the only one with a disability
Being a bully (in primary school) – being angry & wanting attention
Being bullied (in Year 7) - for being a singer & for my wheelchair; I gave up singing for a year.
