Harry Graham Drive - Temporary Road Closure
Parts of the Harry Graham Dive have become unstable following the wet weather in February this year and the road currently has three identified rock falls and 16 landslides in a 900 metre stretch of the road between Mt Kembla Village and Brandy and Water creek crossing.
The road closure is to ensure public safety and safety barriers have been placed in danger areas.
Council apologises to the local community for the inconvenience this closure causes. However a number of large cracks have opened in the road pavement which Council is monitoring.
At this time the landslides are still active and their effect on the road increasing. Work on repairing the road cannot start until the ground dries out. With further significant rainfall predicted over the next few months it may be some time before the road can be re-opened.
Once the ground has dried out Council will start work on repairing the damage. This may result in a partial reopening in some sections to allow work to be carried out.
Movement of the slopes and rocks during periods of extended rainfall is common in this area. Council has a series of alerts leading up to closure of the road once rainfall reaches a certain level.
The rainfall of 28 February to 2 March saw the threshold move into a ‘red alert’ which triggers closure of the road for safety reasons.
Over the coming weeks Council will conduct investigations to determine the extent of the slippages and design appropriate repairs.
While Council has road barriers in place, all drivers are advised to comply with these safety restrictions and not use the road during this closure. The road closure is to protect road users from possible rock falls or road failure.
