Wollongong City Council is starting work on the next planned stage of the Whytes Gully Waste Depot at Kembla Grange to meet the needs of the community over the next 50 years.
The Whytes Gully Waste Depot, built in 1983, was designed as a three stage facility. The first stage operated until 1993 and the second stage is now reaching the end of its lifespan.
Council is now planning for the third and final stage of the landfill site, which is expected to keep the facility up and running up until 2060.
Council has submitted a preliminary environmental assessment (PEA) to the Department of Planning & Infrastructure.
As part of the project, Council will consult with the community and keep them informed as we progress plans to construct the next landfill cell within the existing boundary of Whytes Gully.
To receive information updates about the project and the consultation activities you can register your contact details with the project as follows:
- Call the project's toll free information line 1800 110 055
- Email the project team at whytesgully@gmail.com
- Write to Whytes Gully New Landfill Cell Project, Locked Bag 8821, Wollongong DC NSW 2500
You can also come along to one of the community information sessions, which have been organised by the project team as part of its environmental assessment process. At these sessions, the team is seeking input from the community to ensure the proposed new landfill cell addresses community concerns appropriately.
The community information sessions will be held on
Thursday 24 November, 6-8pm
Unanderra Community Centre, cnr Princes Highway & Factory Road, Unanderra
Saturday 26 November 1-3pm

As well as securing the future of Whytes Gully landfill, Council is in the initial stages of developing an overall Waste Strategy to guide waste initiatives and programs for the city.
