Creating a Modern & Vibrant City Centre
Wollongong’s Crown Street Mall is moving closer with works to “declutter” the 25-year-old Mall to
begin this year.
Council at its meeting on Monday 12 December 2011 voted to support the design for the refurbishment of Crown Street Mall as prepared by the Government Architect's Office. This plan incorporated ideas and concepts from community members who have commented or made submissions on the plan over the past few years.
Council resolved to fasttrack works to remove parts of the mall, such as the birdcage, plant boxes, and other structures in 2012. Council also asked the Joint Regional Planning Panel to determine the current application to begin major construction works on the mall.
An additional briefing was requested by Council on options for the current plan that would not delay the progress of the adopted design. Some of these included the proposed:
- Children's play area
- Tree species
- Lighting configurations
- Opportunities/spaces for public art (including film and performance)
- Public toilets
- Options for rain protection for pedestrians
The current design plan was approved by the Joint Regional Planning Panel
last month. As part of the $14.2 million project Council has sought further information, including the consideration of public toilets, with major construction work expected to begin in early 2013.
Visit the Crown Street Mall webpage for more information.
The revitalisation of Crown Street Mall was identified as the number one priority in our City Centre Action Plan released in December 2010.
