Wollongong Pop-Up Cycling Routes

Our Wollongong Pop-Up Cycling Routes began rolling out in our city centre from early 2021 as part of Council's Pop-Up Cycling Routes program.

Separated cycleways

These are locations where we've made separated sections of roads just for bikes.

The parking lane on the north side of Smith Street was converted to an on-road cycleway for riders to travel in both directions
Some on-street parking was removed near Young and Belmore streets.

Traffic was changed to one-way eastbound for vehicles
The parking lane on the south side of Smith Street was turned into an on-road cycleway for riders to travel in both directions
The westbound driving lane was converted to on-road parking so there was no loss of on-street parking in this section of Smith Street
Garbage trucks use the on-road cycleway to collect bins on Tuesdays between 5.30 and 6am. During that time riders will need to stay out of the bike lane.

The parking lane on the northwest side of Harbour Street between Smith and Cliff streets was converted to an on-road cycleway for riders to travel in both directions.
Car parking on the northwest side of Harbour Street was removed.

The parking lane on the west side of Kembla Street became an on-road cycleway between Smith and Market streets for riders to travel in both directions. On-street parking was removed on the west side between Smith and Market Streets.
Driving lanes on Kembla Street between Market and Crown streets were adjusted to make room for the on-road cycleway on the west side for riders to travel in both directions. There was no loss of on-street parking in this section.
The current parking lane on the east side of Kembla Street will become an on-road cycleway between Crown and Stewart streets for riders to travel in both directions. Car parking on the east side of Kembla Street will be removed.

The section outside the railway parking station was turned into an on-road cycleway for riders to travel in both directions. Car parking will be kept in this section of Gladstone Avenue.
The footpath in the remaining section of Gladstone Avenue to Crown Street became a shared path.

These measures aim to slow down vehicles to improve safety where the road is shared with bikes.

These pathways will be shared by bikes and pedestrians.

The eastern footpath will become a shared path north of the railway parking station.
There will be a small section of separated on-road cycleway on this route.

Footpaths turned into to shared paths:
- along the northern side of Burelli Street from Wollongong Train Station to the Keira Street intersection
- on a section of the southern Burelli Street footpath from the Keira Street intersection, and
- through MacCabe Park towards Church Street.
Signs and bicycle pavement markings were installed along the route.

The 55C Free Gong Shuttle route was adjusted from February 2021 to allow for our pilot of a separated cycleway along Smith Street.
