Pitch in for Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday
It’s a case of many hands make light work at Clean Up Australia Day events across the region this Sunday, 1 March 2026.
The annual nationwide event encourages Australians to help protect and care for their local environment by collecting rubbish in a bid to provide a more sustainable future.
Wollongong City Council will host a community clean-up from 9am to 11am at Fairy Meadow Beach, meeting beside the Surf Life Saving Club.
Council will also support community-hosted clean-ups from Helensburgh in the north to Dapto in the south, and spots in between.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown praised those putting their hands up to host and join clean-ups across the region.
“We have schoolkids, scouts, community groups, companies and charities participating. It really shows that everyone has a role to play in protecting our environment and the wonderful flora and fauna that call Wollongong home. It’s our joint responsibility to look after where we live,” explained Cr Brown.
Cigarette butts, plastic food wrappers and drink containers are again expected to be the most common types of rubbish collected.
"Aside from ruining the natural beauty of our city, this litter washes into our waterways and can be a major hazard for our marine and bird life.
“The message is clear; dispose of your rubbish in the bin. If there isn’t one where you are, take your rubbish with you and put it in your bin at home.”
See below for times and locations of sites welcoming extra participants or visit the Clean Up Australia Day website to register your own.
