Scanning Day to Help Preserve Missing LGBTQIA+ Stories
Wollongong City Libraries is working to close gaps in the Illawarra’s queer history by hosting a community Scanning Day at Wollongong Library on Saturday 21 February.
Community historians, creatives, activists and LGBTQIA+ community members are invited to bring along photos, posters, postcards, badges, flags, ticket stubs and other memorabilia that capture the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people who have called our region home.
Local Studies librarians will assess, scan or photograph, and record items on the day, ensuring that these important moments, memories and stories are preserved in the library’s collection for future generations.
Wollongong City Libraries Manager, Jessica Bruce, said that capturing diverse stories from our region is a priority for the service.
“We really want to shine a light on the lives, events and stories that haven’t always made it into our local history collections. These moments matter, and we’re excited to help preserve them for future generations.
“We’re hoping this project gives people a chance to share what’s important to them and helps us build a more inclusive local collection.”
The Historic LGBTQIA+ Photo Scanning Day will be held at Wollongong Library, Saturday 21 February from 11am–2pm. Drop‑ins are welcome.
People can also contact the library team for more information or to discuss their items at localhistory@wollongong.nsw.gov.au.
