Expression of Interest for Graffiti Prevention Mural at Fairy Meadow

Mural artists are invited to express interest in designing and creating a vibrant community mural on the amenity block at Guest Park, Fairy Meadow.

The brick-rendered block is next to Fairy Meadow Demonstration School.

The aims of this mural project are to:

  • Reduce the frequency of graffiti and vandalism at the site
  • Improve the appearance, amenity and perceived safety of Guest Park and surrounding areas
  • Extend the lifespan of the building
  • Support community pride, inclusion and a sense of ownership of this public space.

Design guidelines

The mural must meet the following requirements:

  • Cover the following walls:
    • Wall 1 on the front facade, approximately 9 square metres
    • Wall 2 on the front facade, approximately 5 square meters
    • The southern side wall, approximately 26 square meters.
  • Feature a bright, vibrant and visually engaging design that is effective as a graffiti deterrent.
  • Consider one or more of the following themes:
    • Local community identity and cultural diversity
    • Locally significant flora and fauna
    • Local history and places of significance
    • Connection to Country, if appropriate to your art practice.
  • The project, including the design and creation of the mural, must be finished by no later than 22 June 2026.

Selection criteria

This opportunity is open to artists with demonstrated experience in:

  • Public art or mural projects
  • Community development and engagement
  • Working safely and professionally in high-use public spaces.

Wollongong City Council encourages applications from emerging artists. Fees will be paid in line with the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) payment framework. The budget for this project is targeted at emerging artists.

  • Your artist CV (maximum two pages) including examples of your work.
  • An artist statement outlining your proposed concept and approach to this project (maximum 250 words). This should describe your ideas, themes and intent you would explore if your application is successful.
  • A proposed project budget outlining expected costs. This should cover the concept design, artist fee and materials.
  • A proposed project timeline, noting that the mural must be completed no later than 22 June 2026.
