Croker Island photo exhibition

Wednesday 17 November 2021

In 1942, 95 Aboriginal children from a mission station, along with their 3 cottage mothers, escaped the threat of Japanese invasion. Travelling from Croker Island NT by foot, boat, canoe, truck and train, the children arrived in Otford. There, they lived at the Methodist Conference Centre and attended local schools until 1946.

The exhibition, containing 38 photographs from this important time in local history, is currently running at Wollongong Library's art display area on Level 1 until 28 February, 2022. The exhibition is curated by our Local Studies team and provided by the State Library of NSW and the Helensburgh Historical Society.
