Wollongong Community Safety Plan 2021-2025 endorsed

Tuesday 8 December 2020

Council has endorsed the Wollongong Community Safety Plan 2021-2025 following extensive community engagement earlier this year.

The draft Wollongong Community Safety Plan 2021-2025 is the fifth iteration of our community safety plans and provides a framework to guide crime prevention strategies around our community.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that crime prevention and community safety is a ‘whole of community’ approach.

“We’ve learnt over the years that community safety is dependent on the effective collaboration between Council, residents, NSW Police, community groups and local businesses. At the end of the day, Crime prevention and community safety is a job for everyone.”

“Since the 1990s, Council has committed to improving safety and the perceptions of safety within the City of Wollongong. This latest plan builds on a number of strategies that have been tested over the years as well as key learnings from previous plans.”

The Wollongong Community Safety Plan 2021-2025 comprises of:

- a review of actions and initiatives undertaken over the last four years

- a detailed community safety and crime prevention action plan that targets specific crimes and perceptions of safety

- information on current crime trends in relation to the Wollongong LGA.

The delivery of the Plan will be undertaken in partnership with key organisations, services, residents and businesses.

To develop the Plan, Council undertook extensive community engagement earlier in the year including an online public safety survey, information stands and consultation with neighbourhood forums, Council’s Reference Group and key stakeholders.

“The goal of the Wollongong Community Safety Plan 2021-2025 is to continue to build the capacity of local communities to take control of community safety and crime prevention,” said Cr Bradbery.

“We want to make Wollongong a safe and welcoming City for everyone. Increasing the perceptions of safety and preventing criminal activity is key to creating a vibrant, connected community and liveable City.”
