I love a bike city because…

Thursday 22 April 2021

We're asking our younger residents to share what they love about bike riding in Wollongong.

The ‘I love a bike city because…’ public exhibition invites young people between the ages of 12 to 24 years to submit an image that captures what they love about bike riding in their community.

“As part of the exhibition, we’ll select twenty images to be displayed on panels on the exterior walls of Wollongong Youth Centre as well as exhibited within the Youth Centre building,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said

“I encourage all of our young people to submit a photo to be considered for this exhibition. This is an opportunity to share what you love about Wollongong and help increase awareness of bike riding within your community.

The ‘I love a bike city because…’ exhibition comes at a time where Council is investing in new pop-up cycling infrastructure within the Wollongong CBD, Port Kembla, Thirroul and Towradgi.

In February, Wollongong received international recognition as a Bike City. The UCI Bike City Label is an aspirational award that both recognises the elite cycling cities of the world as well as cities that are working to become cycling cities.

“Council has made no secret that we have a strong focus on improving access to cycling for people of all levels of ability. Although we know not everyone rides a bike, we want to empower everyone to be able to use more active forms of transport,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Over the past few months, we’ve been doing a lot of work within the Wollongong CBD and some of our other suburbs to enhance the way we might cycle through our communities.

To be considered for the ‘I love a bike city because…’ exhibition, you must be a young person between the ages of 12 to 24 years in the Wollongong Local Government Area. Young people can submit in person at the Youth Centre or by emailing youthservices@wollongong.nsw.gov.au.

Submissions close 5pm Sunday 16 May 2021. The exhibition will be launched at the Wollongong Youth Centre on Thursday 1 July 2021.

Find out how you can submit an entry into the exhibition by visiting the I love a bike city webpage.
