Music workshops hitting all the right notes

Wollongong Youth Services are hitting all the right notes with their latest online workshop for young women and gender diverse young people looking for guidance in the music industry.

Weekly online workshops are being delivered to young women and non-binary young people between the ages of 12-24. These sessions focus on learning the ins and outs of the music industry under the watchful mentoring eye of local Wollongong artists.

Originally planned for a face-to-face delivery, the online workshops have been developed to inform, inspire and connect with young people during this difficult time of social isolation. The program aims to support, equip and empower young women and non-binary young people to claim their status as next generation artists in a profession that often faces challenges in providing equal opportunity for all genders.

Topics are presented weekly and focus on addressing real-world artist complexities, and include conversations about instruments, song writing, producing and performing as well as navigating business, marketing and legal hoops, and creating career resilience. Participants are also mentored on their own unique creative projects.

“This is an innovative workshop that helps support and develop the talent of young people in our city,’’ Wollongong City Acting Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown said.

“As an enthusiastic young person, the opportunity to listen, discuss and develop music ideas with other talented music professionals is remarkable. It is from programs like these that the next wave of Wollongong artists will emerge, as we continue to support our community’s arts culture from the grass roots level.”

The program is run online on Wednesdays at 4pm. Special guest presenters will also participate providing insights in a diverse range of industry themes
