Celebrating Emma McKeon – now and in the future

Tuesday 3 August 2021

Everyone who cheered on homegrown swimming sensation Emma McKeon during the Tokyo Olympics will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on ways to recognise her sporting success.

Over the coming months, Wollongong City Council will consider ways to recognise Emma and her achievements, and the mark she has made on Australia’s swimming history.

“It’s only right to recognise Emma for her hard work, talent and dedication that has resulted in her becoming the most decorated Australian Olympic athlete of all time,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“In her career to date she has earnt a total of 11 Olympic medals and as a city we need to consider what next we can do to acknowledge her place in history.

“However, this isn’t a decision that’s driven by Council alone. We want to hear from our community and, most importantly of all, we want to talk with Emma. It’s essential we hear from her about how she feels about something that will be her legacy.’’

Cr Bradbery said Emma McKeon has previously been awarded the Keys to the City, along with Nicole Beck and Emma Tonegato, after the 2016 Rio Olympics.

One of the suggestions recommended by Council at its meeting on Monday 2 August is for naming a venue or location in the city after the swimmer. It’s not the first time Council has acknowledged a local sporting hero with Beaton Park Leisure Centre’s track facility named after athlete Kerryn McCann. She was best known for winning the marathon at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Cr Bradbery said while community celebrations might be focussed on celebrating Emma McKeon’s success, this didn’t take away from the pride our residents have for all local athletes competing at the Olympic and upcoming Paralympic games.

“As individuals and as a community we’re so very proud of all those who have represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympics, and those who are preparing to compete in the upcoming Paralympic games,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“To represent Australia and our city is a major achievement and one they should be so proud of. on behalf of our city’s residents, I can say we’re proud of them, and they should all be recognised for the elite level of success they’ve achieved in their chosen sport.’’

Opportunities to provide feedback on recognition of Emma McKeon will be promoted through Council’s social media channels and on our website over the coming months.
