Electric vehicle charging could energise the community

The use of public land for the potential installation of electric vehicle charging stations in Wollongong has been given the tick of approval following Monday night’s Council meeting.

The Electric Vehicle Charging Stations on Public Land Policy provides guidance on the charging infrastructure and opens the door for applications for electric vehicle chargers in popular public areas to be assessed.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that the introduction of more areas for charging stations was a positive addition, providing the opportunity for more sustainable transport alternatives throughout the city.

“The increase in charging infrastructure will reduce range anxiety for owners of electric vehicles and increase the opportunity to promote the technology to the wider Wollongong community,

“More charging stations in our popular areas opens the option of electric vehicle owners visiting more of our restaurants and shops, and also exposes our community to electric vehicle technology and ownership,

“Council won’t own or operate the charging stations but is keen to make sure they are accessible, convenient and the meet the needs of electric vehicle drivers. We are committed to increasing the availability of the stations and this policy makes it really clear what our procurement, site selection, design and licencing requirements are,”

“Moving forward, this infrastructure will play a part in achieving Wollongong’s emissions reduction target of net zero by 2050,” said Cr Bradbery.
