Artist Studio opportunities now open

Monday 20 December 2021

If you’re an artist or creative looking for an affordable studio space – we want to hear from you.

Expressions of interest are now open for local artists, as well as young and emerging creatives to apply for a 12-month Artist Studio opportunity at the newly refurbished Creative Wollongong Studios or Wollongong Youth Services.

There are six Creative Wollongong Studio opportunities on offer to local artists over 18 years, and one Youth Services Residency open to people aged 18-24 years.

“We’re looking for local artists, as well as a young local artist, to take part in a 12-month residency in order to develop and grow their professional skills and portfolio,” Wollongong City Council Director Community Services Kerry Hunt said.

“The six Creative Wollongong Studio Residencies aim to support local artists through a heavily subsidised studio space in the heart of Wollongong. This program will offer artists opportunities to collaborate and network with other artists as well as engage with the broader community through open studio tours, artist talks, and skill development opportunities.

“Our Wollongong Youth Services’ Artist in Residence program will give a young person access to a studio, exhibition space and art supplies. It’s an opportunity for a young artist to work with other creatives and mentors while they develop their studio practice. They will also be able to build experience through co-facilitating a weekly art program and supporting other young people to create an artwork for the Youth Services.”

Successful applicants will be assessed based on merit and interview. For the selection criteria and information on how to apply visit our website.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for artists, especially those whose work was impacted by COVID-19. Council values and supports our local creative community and artist in residence programs are a great way to foster local talent in a safe, collaborative and community-driven space,” Ms Hunt said.

“I encourage local artists to consider applying and I also would like to encourage artists and creatives from diverse cultural and language backgrounds, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply for these opportunities.”

Studios will be available from March 2022. Applications are open until midnight Sunday 30 January 2022.
