Work begins to widen Mullet Creek Bridge shared cycleway
As part of a focus on improving the city’s cycleway network, work has started this week on revamping cycling access across Mullet Creek Bridge.
From Thursday 2 July, a new kerb, gutter and section of a new widened shared cycleway will be constructed as part of the ongoing Bong Bong Road Cycleway Connection project.
This section of work is anticipated to take up to two weeks to complete and during this time, a lane of traffic will be temporarily closed on Bong Bong Road with a controller managing traffic via a single lane.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said the cycleway works were a key focus for Council and these works would support bike riders by providing safer riding opportunities.
“Widening the shared cycleway across Mullet Creek Bridge is just one way we’re improving Wollongong’s existing cycle routes,’’ he said.
‘’Hopefully this upgrade will encourage more Wollongong residents to ditch the daily commute for a bike, especially to the rail station! Don’t forget the shared pathway etiquette and keep left or slow down when passing pedestrians.’’
Cr Bradbery asked that drivers plan ahead to help reduce congestion during this time.
“We’ve scheduled work to keep disruptions to a minimum. But if you’re planning on using Bong Bong Road, consider travelling outside of peak times to help keep traffic moving at a safe speed.”
Work hours are from 7am to 4pm depending on traffic volume and both lanes will be reopened every afternoon after crew have completed their shift.
Council’s draft Cycling Strategy is currently on exhibition for community feedback.
