Wollongong CBD’s music scene is heating up this winter with more than 20 venues hosting live performances.

The new Wollongong CBD website captures a wealth of musical information – from venues and events, to musicians and gigs – so everyone can find their musical match.

“Sometimes it can be a little challenging when you know you want to go out and catch some live music, but aren’t sure what’s on or where to find information about what’s happening,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“We all know if a big-name band is in town, but it can be harder to find out about talented musicians who are playing in smaller, cosier venues. This is where this website really comes into its own providing a way to search for something that meets your needs.’’

For instance, if your sound is string orchestra, you will enjoy the talents of Steel City Strings who are listed on the website thanks to their performances in venues such as Wollongong Town Hall.

If jazz gets your toes moving, then the website highlights some local small bars offering weekend sessions.

For younger music lovers, the Wollongong Youth Centre is a popular location providing a safe space to explore their passions.

“There are many opportunities for young people to rehearse, play live, develop their confidence and on-stage presence, build their audiences and promote their music,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Through Youth Services, we work with our young people to put on all-ages events so they can see their favourite bands in a safe, alcohol-free environment.”

While COVID restrictions has proved to be challenging for the entertainment industry, Cr Bradbery said the Youth Centre were able to navigate this time with a number of young artists.

“They’re a talented and passionate group who helped innovate our live music program. We’re grateful to have collaborated with them and every young person who has helped boost the scene over the years,” Cr Bradbery said.

Find your next music destination on our Wollongong CBD website with over 20 venues to choose from. Coming soon will be details on our successful applicants of our live music grants who will be bringing innovative and free music performances to our CBD venues from July to October.

In the meantime, walk through Crown Street Mall to see our City of Sound exhibition highlighting 15 different musicians and 8 venues.
