New accessible amenities for Gilmore Park

Family and sporting visits to Gilmore Park in West Wollongong will be easier with the construction of new accessible amenities to begin in the upcoming weeks.

Council accepted a tender on Monday 22 February for a scope of works to construct new amenities, a sealed accessible car space with a pedestrian kerb ramp, and footpaths leading to the facility.

This follows a Council audit that rated the current facility as poor in relation to its condition, accessibility, location, and safety.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said Council continues to upgrade public facilities to ensure they are accessible, safe, and functional for community use.

“This park is a well-loved location with its great playground and tennis courts. By adding up to date accessible amenities, it creates a safer environment for our community and their outdoor activities,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Having available facilities, such as toilets, makes a difference as they influence how residents and visitors are able to enjoy our outdoor spaces. Our focus is ensuring they are meeting community standards and are being maintained appropriately.”

The new amenities are designed in line with Wollongong City Council’s Draft Public Toilet Strategy and will be constructed in a more serviceable location which better meets the needs of the community.

The design also incorporates Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliance and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) requirements.

Works are anticipated to begin at the end of March and be completed by end of May depending on weather and other conditions.
