Three important conversations on Helensburgh

Wollongong City Council is calling for feedback from community members about three strategic projects in Helensburgh – the proposed Town Centre Plan, the Streetscape Masterplan and an option for the Helensburgh Library Project.

“Helensburgh is a vital town in our city and is our most northern area where we have about 7,100 community members,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Council has decided to combine these three essential opportunities so we can build a comprehensive look at what future considerations and actions we need to take. Council has already delivered a new play space in Charles Harper Park and new fitness equipment for the town.”

By engaging on the plans simultaneously, Council is able to streamline community engagement, and also develop phased plans that can be ready to roll in early 2021.

It’s not the first time Council has consulted on the Town Centre plan. Previously we have undertaken extensive consultation with the Helensburgh community, including school children, on a town centre plan and streetscape masterplan. We have used online surveys and community workshops to find out more about what the community would like to see in the future. This information we collected has been used to influence the documents currently on exhibition.

“Now we are asking the broader community to visit our website and join the conversation on the proposed draft Town Centre Plan, the draft Streetscape Masterplan and what they would like to see included in a new, multi-purpose community facility,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“I encourage everyone who has an interest in the future of Helensburgh, and this might be local residents or those who visit the town centre for work, socialising or for shopping, to join in this phase of community engagement. It’s a way you can get involved in something that directly affects the Helensburgh community for years to come.’’

What’s on Exhibition:

Draft Town Centre Plan

This sets out a vision and strategy for the town centre.

Draft Streetscape Masterplan

The main aims are to create and celebrate the village-like Helensburgh town centre and to create a low-speed environment that makes it friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. The streetscape masterplan outlines the connections character and meeting places that can be “built into” the centre. It also outlines the proposed extra trees and shrubs that can be planted.

Helensburgh Library Project Option

Council has begun the long-term project to construct a new and improved modern library and community centre in Helensburgh village centre. We are considering the option of integrating the community centre and library to create an integrated community hub, similar to the hub at Thirroul and are asking for ideas on the look and feel of a future library project.

Submissions on the three proposals close at COB on Monday 22 June. The best way to do this is through our Join The Conversation webpage and take part in the surveys or you can email us with your comments.
