Share your cycling experiences in Wollongong

Wednesday 13 November 2019

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a novice with training wheels or someone who never hops on a bike, we want to hear about your cycling experiences.

Wollongong City Council is reviewing its Bike Plan with a focus on getting more people to ride.

The plan will be updated to become the Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030 and will be based on feedback about our community’s immediate and long-term needs, aspirations and vision for cycling in Wollongong.

“This is an important opportunity for everyone in our city to provide feedback on cycling in Wollongong,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Cycling is now on the agenda as an alternative transport opportunity as well as a recreational and sporting pursuit. Your ideas and feedback are extremely important.

“We want to hear from you about what you love about cycling and what you need to be able to cycle more in our city. And, if you don’t cycle, we want to hear your views, too.’’

Community feedback for the Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030 is open until Monday 9 December. Comments are being collected through an online survey, as well as at three information stands being held on Saturday 16 November at North Beach Bathers Pavilion from 8.30am to 10.30am and Bulli Beach from 12 noon to 2pm, and on Saturday 23 November at Port Kembla Pool from 8.30 am to 10.30am.

We’ll also hold targeted workshops with young people to hear what would get them cycling now and keep them riding into the future.

“In recent years we’ve invested more than $20 million on cycleways and related projects like the Grand Pacific Walk and Blue Mile shared path,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“It’s a key Council focus to keep encouraging our residents and visitors’ use of cycling as an alternative mode of transport. Not only does it have broad environmental and health benefits, it allows people to enjoy our city’s spectacular scenery.

“This strategy will provide a framework moving forward of areas for Council to focus on when it comes to improvements to roads, pathways and other essential infrastructure such as our permanent bike repair station at North Beach. It will also guide us on the road safety and rider education programs and services we need to support safe cycling, after all A Metre Matters.”

“It also provides an opportunity to look strategically at what our city offers ahead of the 2022 UCI Road World Championships and see where our strengths are, and what improvements we might like to prioritise before the focus of world cycling is on us.’’
