Next Step for Corrimal Coke Works

Thursday 5 November 2020

Corrimal Coke Works

The draft Planning Proposal for the former Corrimal Coke Works has been deferred as Council calls for further revisions to the proposed redevelopment.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that this decision was about listening to the concerns of community members while allowing the development to progress to the next stage.

“We know that there’s a lot of community interest in the future of the former Corrimal Coke Works. The progression of a draft Planning Proposal is lengthy and rigorous and it’s important that we get things right at this stage of the process.”

The need to revise the plan follows a decision of Council that the developers of the Corrimal Coke Works make amendments to the draft Planning Proposal including changes to the maximum number of dwellings and a reduction in the maximum building height.

This decision follows Council’s resolution in September 2020 to progress a Local Heritage listing for the Corrimal Coke Works site. Part of the site has now been listed as a local heritage conservation area under the Wollongong Local Environmental Plan 2009.

“The Corrimal Coke Works are an important part of our community’s heritage and have formed a recognisable part of the Corrimal’s skyline for over 100 years,” said Cr Bradbery.

“Like the Coke Works themselves, this redevelopment process has a long history to it, and we want to make sure that our community is a key part of the process from start to finish. Community feedback is an essential part of our process and something we take very seriously.

“Council recognises that this site is suitable for a mix of high-density housing but notes this comes with flow on effects to the wider community, particularly in terms of traffic congestion. This is why Council has called for further revisions.’’

Revisions to the draft Planning Proposal will be considered by Council within six months, with Council to make a determination on whether the Corrimal Coke Works redevelopment can be progressed to public exhibition.
