A new look for Purry Burry Point Park boardwalk

Thursday 21 October 2021

In case you missed it, Primbee’s popular boardwalk at Purry Burry Point Park is back and flaunting a new look thanks to recent refurbishment works.

The boardwalk was out of action for a few weeks in September to undergo repairs to the piles, replace beams and install a new raised boardwalk. The boardwalk has been constructed from a recycled fibre reinforced plastic (FRP), which is manufactured in South Australia. FRP is a durable material that won’t warp, rot, or decay due to exposure to moisture and it won’t corrode or be attacked by insects, so we expect it to have a longer life than timber decking.

The popular trail provides a nature route, and with regular use for more than 10 years it was showing signs of its age and the timber had deteriorated. The recent upgrades will ensure it remains available for years to come.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said Council have continued to work through the lockdown period to make sure assets such as at Purry Burry Point are being maintained and looked after.

“The last few months have been difficult, but we’ve focussed on working within the rules of the Public Health Order and continue to address the wear and tear issues of our assets across Wollongong,’’ he said.

“With summer just around the corner and further easing of restrictions, we’re making sure those highly used areas are available and safe. This boardwalk is in a great location with the route surrounded by natural bushland and the Lake. I hope our residents enjoy the nature in our backyard and stay safe whilst doing so.”

Earlier this year, essential works were also completed to North Wollongong’s Puckeys Estate to replace the timber bridge and boardwalk.
