A local Dreamtime story, Gurangaty, will be the literary star of the Wollongong City Council’s 2019 Paint the Gong REaD reading day this Thursday, August 15.

The free event at Warrawong Plaza is an initiative encouraging children to read, talk, sing, rhyme and yarn from birth in an energetic and fun environment. It supports the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week.

The morning will run from 9.30-11.30am and will include fun reading activities, craft, singing and an Aboriginal Art activity with Aunty Lorraine Brown and Aunty Narelle Thomas from Coomaditchie.

Aunty Lorraine will also be one of the guest readers for the morning, reading the locally written story called Gurangaty about how our Illawarra lakes and rivers were made in the Dreamtime.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM will also be guest reading Alpacas With Maracas by Matt Cosgrove at the event. The City’s book-loving mascots, Billy Backpack and Bright Spark will also make an appearance.

“One of the easiest ways to inspire creativity in children is to share in the excitement of reading them a story. Encouraging a love of reading from a young age truly is a gift for life,’’ Cr Bradbery said.
