New Sport Field Lighting for Guest Park

Monday 28 September 2020

Guest Park in Fairy Meadow is set to receive new LED sports field lighting as part of Council’s ongoing series of improvements to sporting fields across the LGA.

Wollongong City Council has accepted the tender for the design and installation of sports field lighting in Guest Park to meet increased sporting demands of the community.

We’re also planning a series of other improvements to Guest Park including a tender for the refurbishment of the Guest Park amenities planned to begin mid-November 2020 as well as proposed upgrades to the Guest Park carpark by Council’s City Works team. Works on the Guest Park carpark is planned for early 2021.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that Council was focussed on improving sporting facilities across the city and the Guest Park upgrades will facilitate more access to the popular space.

“We know that our community loves sport! Good lighting makes sure that our sporting facilities are fit for purpose for the clubs that use them and extends the amount of time people can use these spaces,’’ said Cr Bradbery.

“The Guest Park lighting upgrades will benefit many sport clubs who regularly use the park, including the Illawarra United Stingrays Football Club who plan to use Guest Park as their women’s football club training base in 2021,”

Council’s Sports Ground and Sporting Facilities Strategy 2017-2021 identified lighting as one of the most significant upgrades needed to meet growing demand and use from sporting clubs.

“Council has already installed sport field lighting in 67 fields across the city. The great things about these upgrades is that improved lighting means we can encourage more use of our sporting facilities and provide access to a wide range of sporting codes.

“The upcoming works at Guest Park will offer new opportunities for sporting clubs like the Illawarra United Stingrays Football Club, the Illawarra Church Soccer Association and Football South Coast Mens to train and play at night, and during the day, as well as have access to improvement amenities like those recently finished at Wiseman’s Park and Webb Park.”
