Get pumped! Cringila Hills pump track tender approved

Tuesday 14 September 2021

A $1.59M tender for the construction of a pump track, bike skills playground and stormwater drainage system was accepted by Wollongong City Council at its meeting on Monday 13 September 2021.

The design of the pump track will cater for users of all types of bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller skates and roller blades and will be fun for the whole family and is set within the Cringila Hills Recreation Precinct.

The mountain bike skills playground will be a purpose-built facility for practicing mountain bike riding skills with jump features linked together with other features such as berms, rock gardens, and log roll overs.

“The acceptance of this tender marks the start of the next phase of work in this exciting project and brings the total among Council has budgeted for this site for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 financial years to about $4M,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“The pump track and bike skills playground are key items identified within the Cringila Hills Masterplan, which also includes the bike and walking trails already under construction. I know there are a lot of people who are very excited at the prospect of seeing this recreation space open for use.’’

Work is expected work will start on the asphalt pump track and mountain bike skills playground later this year and, provided we get good weather, it’s anticipated it’ll be finished mid-2022. The family-friendly facilities will complement the new district level playground and improved car park.

Meanwhile, work on the site’s main bike trails is continuing with the first phase of Cringila Hills recreation park on track to be open before summer. While many of the tracks are looking finished, work is still ongoing with the trails being compacted and groomed, and new signage being rolled out to ensure riders move safely around the site.

“We’re getting to the pointy end of the bike trail construction and I know there are some very excited riders in our community who are pumped and keen to get on the trails,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“To those riders I’d say just hold your excitement for a little longer. We’re getting close to finishing and we’ll be sure to let you know when the trails are ready to ride.’’

The bike trails are jointly funded by Wollongong City Council and $525,000 from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (phase 2).
