Update for Wongawilli Road project

Friday 19 November 2021

We’re marking another key milestone in Stage 1 of the Wongawilli Access Project with work nearly complete along the section of road between Shone Avenue and Smiths Lane.

This week’s sunny weather has provided the opportunity for the final asphalt sealing to go down. Once this is completely dry, we’ll be able to apply the final line marking roadworks.

Over the past few months, we’ve upgraded this section of the road by improving the stormwater system as well as widening and reconstructing the road. It’s an important long-term project that aims to build the necessary infrastructure to support Wongawilli and West Dapto’s growing population, reduce flood risks and improve safety.

“This is a big project with a significant volume of work that’s been completed to improve the road for our community. Council thanks residents for their support and patience with the changed traffic and parking conditions while we have been undertaking this work,” Wollongong City Council Director Infrastructure + Works Joanne Page said.

“Right now, we’re putting the finishing touches on the road. Once the asphalt has cured in a few weeks’ time, we’ll then complete the line marking.

“From mid-November Council will start work on the new shared path from Smiths Land to Shone Avenue. We’ll also plant street trees, to offer shade to complete this section, at the same time.”

Key project milestones:

  • Smiths Lane intersection has reopened (from Monday 15 November)
  • Final asphalt on the entire Wongawilli Road pavement has been laid. This should take up to two weeks to cure and dry, pending weather conditions
  • Final road line marking, including all travel lanes and parking lanes, will be completed once the asphalt cures (planned to start late-November)
  • Work has already begun to upgrade the Smiths Lane intersection and provide pedestrian access with a concrete shared path and pedestrian ramp
  • Works to continue as we build the new shared path on the east bound kerb side lane. Traffic control will be in place during construction to ensure safety. Scheduled to start mid-November once asphalt works are complete
  • New street trees will be planted along the verges with further landscaping works to take place as we build the shared path.

“While we complete these projects, traffic control will remain onsite to ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians and our staff,” Ms Page said.

“If you need access to this road during this time, know that the staff onsite are very approachable and are more than happy to manage any requests your may have.

“I’d like to remind drivers to continue to drive to the conditions while major construction continues. Remember that for the next couple of weeks this area will remain under traffic control and you are passing through an active construction site so please observe the speed limits.”
