A push for bike parking improvements

As part of our commitment to making Wollongong a great place to ride, we’re proposing to install new bike parking across our city. To help us get the locations and number of bike rails right, we’re asking residents to share their feedback with us.

During the development of the Wollongong Cycling Strategy 2030, the community identified bike parking as a priority and nominated potential sites near busy areas such as shops, beaches, playgrounds and public transport.

Following this, bike parking locations are being proposed at 26 different sites, from Thirroul in the north to Berkeley in the south.

Each location will have bike racks made of stainless steel and will be one of two designs – a hoop rail or a post rail. There will also be a bike parking sign installed near the site to let riders know this facility is available.

“We’re committed to improving cycling infrastructure around Wollongong for our community and visitors to enjoy. Through community engagement we know facilities such as bike parking makes a difference when cycling around the city,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“It will encourage people to ride more often if they have safe and suitable locations to park their bikes while taking a break, catching public transport or enjoying their final stop or destination. So, it’s important for us to ensure the bike rails at each site are clearly seen and are accessible for our riders.

“It’s a perfect opportunity for our residents to take a look at the proposed plans and share their feedback - let us know if there are impacts that we may not have covered in the design before we install the bike rails.”
