West Dapto Road Upgrade

Wednesday 23 June 2021

As part of Council’s long-term vision for West Dapto, works are planned to upgrade the West Dapto Road between Shone Avenue, Horsley and Rainbird Drive, Kembla Grange.

Ahead of construction starting, we’re sharing the plan and asking for feedback on how we’ll manage potential works impacts with the community.

The large-scale project will include a widened road and upgrades to pavement and drainage works, improvements in flood reliability, new traffic signals and boom gates and flashing lights at the Shone Avenue rail crossing, and new traffic signals at the intersections of West Dapto Road/Shone Ave and West Dapto Rd/Rainbird Drive. Pedestrians and cyclists will also benefit from the construction of a new shared pathway from Wongawilli town centre to the planned Darkes town centre and a new pedestrian bridge.

These works are part of a series of plans for West Dapto that will allow the development of a network of roads to form integrated and connected communities.

“These upgrades are part of our plans to meet the changing needs of current and future residents of West Dapto,” said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM.

“We are grateful to the NSW State Government for their significant funding contribution to this project. The $25.5M they have provided has allowed Council to move forward on these important road links to the benefit of our community.’’

The works will occur in stages from the west to the east along West Dapto Road over several years. Longer term, Council has committed to further upgrades extending along the whole length of West Dapto Road and these can be viewed online in the West Dapto Developments Contributions plan 2020 and on the West Dapto Projects page on our website.

“We are committed to working with our residents not only to provide the improvements to road infrastructure that the area needs, but to also carrying them out in a way that minimises disruption where possible,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

The West Dapto Road upgrade is proudly funded by the NSW State Government's Restart NSW Housing Acceleration Fund (HAF), which provided $25.5 million towards the project.

The engagement is open until 12 July and feedback can be left online on the Our Wollongong website.
