From Sunday 3 July to Sunday 10 July, we’re celebrating NAIDOC Week with a series of free songwriting workshops presented by Yuin rapper, producer and radio host Nooky.

First Nations superstar – Nooky – will be joining forces with Wollongong City Council’s Youth Services to teach the next generation how to use hip-hop as part of their healing process.

“Music is where I let the warrior come out and protect myself,” – Nooky.

The free songwriting workshops will be held across three locations: Bundaleer Community Centre, Koonawarra Community Centre and Wollongong Youth Centre.

Then on Friday 8 July, Nooky, supported by local rappers Scraps and Blacx as well as Barkaa’s tour DJ FLY WAVES will take the stage at the Wollongong Youth Centre for an evening of free live music.

Wollongong City Council Community Development + Engagement Manager Alison Bradford said that the songwriting workshops were open to young people who want to try something new or build on their skills.

“The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’, a rallying cry for systemic change, truth-telling and genuine commitment from everyone,” Ms Bradford said.

“Songwriting and making music gives young people in particular access to their own voice so that they have the strength and confidence to call for change and be part of the truth-telling process.

“We’re really excited to be able to offer such a creative and powerful workshop this NAIDOC Week and the all-ages live music event featuring Nooky, supported by Scraps and Blacx will be a really great night out in Wollongong. I highly encourage young people to get involved and sign up to attend the free songwriting workshops.”

This year, Wollongong City Council is also supporting two NAIDOC Family Fun community events. The events are funded through Council’s NAIDOC Week grants and will offer activities and fun for children and families to enjoy.
