Wollongong City Council will be switching off the non-essential lighting tomorrow evening, joining millions of others across the globe in the Earth Hour movement.

Earth Hour will take place on Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm AEDT for one hour. Council's Administration building and libraries will be doing their part by switching off all non-essential lighting across their facilities.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said Earth Hour is an opportunity to think about how we can be more environmentally friendly, and also a way to show our support for stronger action to protect our planet’s future.

In line with Earth Hour, the lights in administration building are on sensors, switching off when not in use. This is one of the reasons it has been rated a 6 Star Green Star building, achieved through a variety of measures including smart lighting upgrades, installation of low flow taps and waste diversion.

“This is a great way to participate in a global cause, from our own homes,’’ Cr Bradbery said. “Social distancing doesn’t mean losing social connection, and we can collectively raise our voices through the symbolic action of switching off our lights for an hour tomorrow night.”
