Have your say on upgrade works at Piccadilly Centre

Friday 24 March 2023

Council has been designing upgrades to improve access and foot traffic at one of Wollongong’s busiest bus stops, Piccadilly Centre at the top end of Crown Street.

The proposed works, scheduled to begin later this year, would see the indented bus bay removed and replaced with a full-width pedestrian footpath which allows easier access for passengers and pedestrians. The bus stop would be relocated into the left-hand lane and moved slightly eastward to allow an extended turning lane into Gladstone Avenue. The widened footpath would also be paved and include new seating and planter boxes to enhance this city gateway.

Council is also working with Australia Post to relocate the post box around the corner onto Gladstone Avenue.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said nearby residents and businesses had been sent a copy of the proposed plans and invited to provide feedback through an online survey.

“We’re committed to continued improvements across our city to make sure footpaths and highly pedestrianised areas are fit for purpose. As part of this project, we’re looking to improve the amenity of the area while promoting the use of public transport,’’ said Cr Bradbery.

“We know this area often attracts comments about its overall look and feel, and we’re looking to address this through improvements to the kerb, footpath and pavers with plans to upgrade these and to look like those on the opposite side of the street.’’

Residents, businesses and users of the area can view the proposed plans and provide their feedback until 31 March 2023 on the Our Wollongong website.
