Botanic Gardens Day

Plant yourself at Wollongong Botanic Garden this Sunday to celebrate Botanic Gardens Day with a plethora of nature focused tours, talks and exhibitions from 10am to 4pm.

Botanic Gardens Day is the signature event for Wollongong Botanic Garden, which is currently celebrating its year-long golden jubilee anniversary.

As part of the celebrations Gardening Australia’s Costa Georgiadis and Clarence Slockee will be leading some of the day’s events.

Head down to the Garden to be part of the live audience broadcast at noon for our ‘Power of Plants’ panel discussion, hosted by Botanic Gardens Day Ambassador Costa Georgiadis. If you can’t make it down to the Botanic Garden, be sure to tune into the Wollongong Botanic Garden Facebook page to catch the live discussion.

Clarence Slockee will be presenting guided tours for visitors at 10am and 2pm of the Towri Bush Tucker Garden.

There are plenty of other free activities starting from 10am. Jump on a buggy tour or enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at our work in conserving threatened plant species in our nursery guided tour, view the botanic art and photography exhibition, or take part in garden power demonstrations. There’s plenty for the kids as well, with a Tree Musketeers Show at 11am and all-day scavenger hunt.

The Garden will also use the day to launch their new ‘Go Slow for a ‘Mo’ Nature Trail. The self-guided walk focuses on creating meaningful moments in nature to assist people in connecting with their surroundings and supporting physical and mental health.

“This year our Botanic Garden is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and is doing so in style with this collaboration with Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand Inc. for Botanic Gardens Day,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Our Garden is taking a lead role in celebrating the day by hosting a livestream panel discussion, and there will be more than 100 botanic gardens across Australia and New Zealand that will celebrate the day.”

“Wollongong Botanic Garden is not only a beautiful place to visit and reconnect with nature, but it provides an important educational link for our community to learn about the importance of biodiversity as well as Council’s priorities around Urban Greening and Climate Change Mitigation Programs.’’

The day’s theme and events will focus on the power of plants and their influence on weather and climate stabilisation, their value as food, wildlife habitat, in research and medicine, and their impact on our wellbeing.

“There are plenty of events throughout the day for the community to enjoy. Learning about nature and exploring our Botanic Garden offers people the chance to appreciate the importance and power of plants.“ Cr Bradbery said.
