Putting privacy on the agenda

Friday 7 May 2021

We take our community’s privacy seriously and that’s why we’re encouraging residents to brush up on their rights during Privacy Awareness Week NSW 2021.

This year, the week is themed Make Privacy a Priority and a range of information has been developed by the NSW Government to support people to understand the rules around privacy and how they’re applied.

There is also a focus on supporting people to learn more about how they can protect their personal information whether at home or at work.

“It’s important people understand how they can protect their personal information and what steps businesses and other organisations must take under the Privacy Act,’’ Wollongong Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“I would encourage people to visit the office of the NSW Information and Privacy Commission’s website to read up on what they can do to look after details that are out in the public domain.’’

At Council we have a Privacy Management Plan that details how we collect, manage and share the personal information of our community members that we may hold.

“Council has many roles and responsibilities when it comes to the functioning of our city and that means we may have access to a range of personal information,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“Our Privacy Management Plan sets out clearly and transparently what we do, and how we protect our residents’ information. In fact, Council adopted an updated Plan at its most recent meeting and this revised document included how we handle personal information in newer or emerging activities such as social media, and the use of QR Codes for visitor recording.

“Remember to be cautious disclosing your personal details, especially online. This is an always evolving environment and it’s important we continue to stay on top of the ways to protect people’s personal data.’’
