We’re looking for people who want to help their community

Thursday 12 May 2022

Have you ever put your hand up to help at your children’s school’s P&C, joined a tree planting day, given your time to coach a local basketball team, or helped run a community event?

If you answered yes to any of these then congratulations, you’re a volunteer! Volunteering comes in a wide range of shapes and forms and many of us are really passionate about helping our community.

We know there are many people who are looking for opportunities to give back and that’s why we’re inviting you to attend the Illawarra Volunteer Expo on Thursday 19 May at the Wollongong Town Hall. Here you can learn about the many different volunteering opportunities available and find out how you can get involved in your community.

“Whether you want to lead a free tour at the Wollongong Art Gallery, deliver library books to people who are house-bound, plant trees in public spaces, help run a major event, support young people through youth activities, give homework help to students from refugee backgrounds, or drive community members who lack transport to their appointments – there really is a volunteering opportunity for everyone,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“Best of all you can tailor your volunteering work to suit your schedule as there are hundreds of ready-to-start short and longer-term opportunities available. The Volunteering Expo is a great place to speak to volunteers, find out more and ask questions.”

Entry is free and no bookings are required to attend. Simply visit the Wollongong Town Hall on Thursday 19 May from 9.30am – 3.30pm.

The Volunteering Expo is hosted by Wollongong City Council’s service, Volunteering Illawarra which provides information on volunteering vacancies, support, referral and training opportunities in Wollongong, Shellharbour, and Kiama Local Government Areas.

This year, representatives from the 2022 UCI Road World Championships will be joining the expo to provide information on volunteering opportunities for the big event that lands in Wollongong from the 18-25 September.

“We’re inviting the entire Wollongong community to get involved with one of the top international annual sporting events and to proudly represent our city to visitors from all over the country and the world,” Wollongong 2022 CEO Stu Taggart said.

“One of Wollongong’s defining attributes is its people and the strong sense of community that thrives here – we can’t wait to see that shine during the UCI Road World Championships.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and by volunteering you’ll receive an exclusive Wollongong 2022 volunteer uniform, make new friends and get up close to the action as the world’s best cyclists take to the streets of Wollongong. Don’t miss out on your chance to be part of it, apply now.”

Cr Bradbery said that the Volunteering Expo will be held during National Volunteer Week, which is Australia’s largest celebration of volunteers and the vital work they do for our communities.

“This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week is “better together” which serves as a reminder that volunteering is the lifeblood of so many important programs and social services. Volunteers make a tangible difference in people’s lives and proves the strength of our community when it comes to supporting one another,” Cr Bradbery said.

“I highly encourage everyone to visit the Volunteer Expo on Thursday, and if you can’t make it – don’t worry! Contact Volunteering Illawarra or visit their website for more information about how you can get involved today.”
