Announcing the recipients of Council’s Sports Grants Program

Tuesday 9 May 2023

Wollongong City Council is giving $423,000 in financial assistance to local sporting clubs through Council’s Sports Grants Program.

Successful recipients of the grants include Football South Coast, Illawarra Hockey, Wiseman Tennis, Helensburgh Off Road Cycling, Dapto Rugby League, Russell Vale Junior Rugby League, Figtree Junior Football Club, Helensburgh Thistles, and Northern Districts Cricket.

This round of grant funding complements Council’s draft Infrastructure and Delivery Program 2023/24-2026/27 which aims to invest over $20 million in sportsgrounds and sporting facilities over the next four years. That’s in addition to the $4.5 million spent per annum on maintaining sportsgrounds.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said that the Sports Grants Program aimed to provide financial assistance to clubs and associations that use Council sportsgrounds.

“Our goal is to support the Wollongong sporting community by encouraging people of all ages and abilities to participate in sport,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Our sports grounds are well-used and much-loved community spaces. The Sports Grants Program aims to invest in existing sporting infrastructure to ensure it meets the needs of the people who use it day in and day out.

“This year, we are pleased to be able to support nine local sporting clubs realise their infrastructure projects and support community sport and recreation across the City of Wollongong.”
