Rating Wollongong’s liveability

Tuesday 23 May 2023

What makes Wollongong a great place to live?

That’s one of the big questions that’s being tackled as part of the 2023 Australian Liveability Census, the country’s largest social research project.

It’s the first time Wollongong City Council has participated in the liveability census and provides an opportunity to learn more about what people want in their neighbourhoods. It looks at what they value about their neighbourhood, its functionality, aesthetics and what activities, events and spaces are important.

“The decisions made by Council are very much data-driven and we often ask the community for feedback on plans and projects,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“This liveability census will collect some fascinating information from residents right across our city about the things that are important to them about their suburbs, their neighbourhoods and what they value.

“We’ll then use this information to inform future decisions of Council. It’ll be part of an evolving collection of data that helps us reflect and report on the impact of current programs and projects and guide future strategies and plans.’’

Cr Bradbery said the term wellbeing meant different things to different people and communities, and that it was important that we were able to hear from as many people as possible about what is important to them, their families and their communities.

“We’re a very diverse community in this city and the needs and wants of those living in Helensburgh might be different to those in West Dapto and in Port Kembla, for example,’’ he said.

“We work to strike a balance across the board for our communities and using accurate and relevant data is a good way to inform our decision-making processes.’’

The 2023 Australian Liveability Census is open to Wollongong’s residents until 13 June 2023. It can be filled out online, by following the links off Council’s website, or by visiting Help make our neighbourhoods great places for people. It is also available in multiple languages.

The Liveability Census is facilitated by independent research company, Place Score, and is supported by more than 80 local and state government agencies as well as community groups, education bodies and private organisations.

The information gathered through the Liveability Census will also be used by the State Government to create targeted reports for each of the Six Cities region of the Great Cities Commission.

“I’d encourage residents keen to influence what their city and community will look like, and the services and opportunities available to them into the future, to take the time to jump online and fill out the survey,’’ Cr Bradbery said.

“Everyone’s voice and opinions are important and by telling us what you think, you can help collaborate on a positive and proactive future.’’
