Council proposes new Ward boundaries

Wollongong City Council is proposing to adjust its Ward boundaries in preparation for the local government elections to be held in September 2020.

Council needs to make sure there’s a balanced number of people living within each of our three wards. The changes to the boundary between Wards 1 and 2 will affect a small number of residents in North Wollongong, Fairy Meadow and Balgownie. While the changes between Wards 2 and 3 affect residents in parts of Figtree, Unanderra and Farmborough Heights.

Ward 1 covers from Helensburgh south to North Wollongong, Ward 2 is Wollongong in the east to Mt Keira/Mt Kembla in the west and goes as far south as Unanderra. Ward 3 covers Port Kembla to Yallah and west to Wongawilli and the escarpment.

Council endorsed the proposed Ward boundaries on Monday 18 November and will now send the proposal to the NSW Electoral Commissioner for approval.

Under the proposed new Wards, Ward 1 will include 52,293 people, Ward 2 includes 50,613 and Ward 3 includes 49,965. The number of people of voting age within each of the Wards is within the 10 per cent margin permitted by the NSW Electoral Commission.
