Pop-up Bike Fest Cancelled

Sunday 29 November 2020

Today’s free pop-up cycling event at Lang Park in Wollongong has been cancelled due to the extreme weather forecast.

The event was to be held from 10am-12 noon today, to coincide with the Illawarra Cycling Club’s Criterium being held on Flagstaff Hill. It was bring presented by Council, in partnership with Ride Nation, Transport NSW and Cycling Tours NSW and was to provide the opportunity to learn new tips and tricks for bike riding around the City of Wollongong.

“We’re disappointed to have to cancel the event at such late notice,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“However the weather conditions we’re facing – extreme temperatures and then strong winds – are not the kind of conditions that support an event like this. In the interest of public health and safety, it’s best to cancel it.

“It might be best to try to stay at home in such extreme weather circumstances especially with hot gale force winds, debris and the risk of dehydration.’’

Cr Bradbery said he encouraged everyone to stay safe and keep cool during today’s hot weather.

“We’ve had a very hot night leading into an extremely hot day,’’ he said.

“For those planning to head to the beach or one of our lifeguard-patrolled pools I encourage you to do so safely. We anticipate roads and car parks around pools will be busy, and everyone should be sure to follow the advice of volunteer life savers and swim between the flags. And if you’re headed to a lifeguard-patrolled pool don’t forget to book your swim through Council’s website.’’
