Calling for feedback on Climate Change Adaptation Plan

Monday 22 November 2021

We’re calling for community feedback on Wollongong City Council’s draft Climate Change Adaption Plan.

Last month, Council endorsed the draft Climate Change Adaptation plan for public exhibition. It is an important strategic document that looks at the practical actions we can take to protect our community from the impacts of climate change. It also represents the final step in our initial climate action commitments under the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.

We are asking our community to share their feedback on the ideas and initiatives we’re proposing in the draft Plan.

Wollongong City Council Director Planning + Environment Linda Davis said that the draft Climate Change Adaption Plan is a very important document and one that may be of interest to residents.

“Science has shown us that we will face a number of environmental challenges this century as our community, Australia and the world grapple with climate change,” Ms Davis said.

“Here in Wollongong, we will face an increasingly difficult climate future which is likely to see extreme weather events and hazards increase in frequency and severity.

“Council’s draft Climate Change Adaptation Plan takes a measured, science-based approach and looks at the practical measures and actions we can take as a local government area to prepare for and respond to these climate hazards and associated risks. The draft Plan looks to the future by outlining a range of actions we can take in the short, medium and long-term.”

The draft Climate Change Adaptation Plan is a part of Council’s overall response to the declared climate emergency in combination with our endorsed Climate Change Mitigation Plan. Both plans work together to tackle different elements of climate change. The Adaptation Plan looks at how we can protect ourselves from the risks and hazards of climate change, while the Mitigation Plan looks at what we can do to reduce our greenhouse emissions to minimise further climate change.

Council’s draft Climate Change Adaptation Plan is on exhibition until Friday 19 December 2021.
